Namaste! My name is Tania May, and I have been an Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga teacher since 2018. Rooted in tradition, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and transformative practice that connects breath (pranayama) with movement (vinyasa) in a flowing sequence of postures (asanas). This method not only builds physical strength and flexibility but also cultivates mental clarity, focus, and inner peace.
Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga follows a structured approach, yet I believe in adapting it to meet the needs of modern practitioners. While respecting its roots, I aim to make this practice approachable and enjoyable, especially for beginners. By incorporating soft background music, I create an inviting atmosphere that helps new students overcome self-consciousness about their Ujjayi breath and find ease in their first steps on the mat.
In my teaching, I prioritize safety, alignment, and gradual progression. Using props as a bridge, I support students in mastering challenging poses without strain, allowing the body and mind to learn step by step. This mindful approach not only prevents injuries but also deepens the student’s connection to their practice, creating a strong foundation for personal growth.
The eight limbs of yoga—Yama (ethical behavior), Niyama (self-discipline), Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), Pratyahara (sense withdrawal), Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (meditation), and Samadhi (absorption)—are central to Ashtanga. I strive to integrate these principles into my classes, encouraging students to move beyond the physical practice and discover its transformative potential on a mental, emotional, and energetic level.
My Mission
My mission is to demystify Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, making it an empowering, joyful, and sustainable practice for everyone. I aim to guide my students toward a balanced and fulfilling life, helping them build not just physical strength and flexibility but also resilience, focus, and self-awareness. Through my teaching, I hope to inspire others to embrace yoga as a lifelong practice that supports their personal growth and helps them connect with their true potential.
